Small business SEO means making it easier for people to find your business when they search for what you sell. Most small businesses should start with local search, because that's where nearby customers are looking and where a small business can realistically compete.
1. Set up Search Console first
Google Search Console is free. It shows which searches already bring people to your site, which pages they land on and how often you appear. Set it up before you change anything, so you can see what's working and measure what you change.
2. Fill in your Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile is free, and it's how you appear on Google Maps and in the map results. Google says local results depend mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search.
- Distance: how far you are from the location being searched.
- Prominence: how well known your business is, including your links and reviews.
You can't change where you are, so work on the other two. Choose the right category, keep your hours and services current, add real photos and reply to your reviews.
3. Give each service its own page
One page listing everything you do is hard to rank. A plumber is better off with separate pages for blocked drains and hot water, because people search for those separately. Each page should say what you do, where you do it, roughly what it costs and how to contact you.
4. Local SEO for small business: cover your area properly
Local SEO means showing up in the areas you serve. If customers search by suburb, make a page for each suburb you really work in, and include real local detail on each one.
On a Melbourne shop we work on, each suburb page has to cover two searches, such as "Richmond florist" and "flower delivery Richmond". Before changing any of those pages, we check Search Console, because a page can rank for a small search that a paid rank tracker misses.
5. Fix the basics on every page
- Each page has its own title and description, written for a person.
- Each page has one main heading that says what it's about.
- Photos are your own, with short descriptions.
- The site is quick and easy to use on a phone.
- Your business name, address and phone number match everywhere online.
What it can look like
This graph shows Google impressions, meaning how often one shop appeared in search results.

Clicks grew more slowly than impressions over those months, so watch clicks and enquiries as well. Your results will depend on your industry, your competition and your starting point.
DIY SEO or paying for help?
DIY SEO can cover a lot if you have the time. Start with steps 1 and 2, then build your most important service pages. SEO services for small business make more sense when you have many pages to manage, or when the work keeps getting pushed aside.
How much does SEO cost in Australia?
SEO cost in Australia varies widely, and published guides put many small business packages at about A$1,500 to A$3,000 a month. Our own prices and a wider comparison are on the pricing page. Whoever you talk to, ask:
- Which pages will you change each month?
- What will you report, and will I get access to the data?
- Do I keep my website and accounts if I leave?
- How long am I locked in?
Be careful of ranking guarantees and cheap link packages. Our SEO page explains how we work.
Common questions about small business SEO
How long does SEO take for a small business?
Expect months. Small local searches can move within weeks of a good page going live, while competitive searches can take a year or more. Be wary of anyone who promises a quick result.
Can I do SEO myself?
Yes, at least the first steps. Search Console and your Google Business Profile are free, and the pages you write will be better for knowing your own customers. Paying for help makes more sense when you run out of time or need many pages done.
Does my website platform matter for SEO?
Less than people think. Most common platforms can rank, as long as you can edit your titles, text and links, and the site is quick on a phone.
Is SEO better than Google Ads?
They do different jobs. Ads bring clicks straight away but stop when you stop paying. SEO is slower to start but keeps working after the page is built. Many small businesses use ads while their SEO builds up.
